Saltwater Tank Updated January 29, 2013

As many of you know my saltwater tank didn’t fair too well when the power went out. We ended up loosing most of everything inside. We had to start all over with the fish and most of the corals. On Sunday we went to the fish store, Coral Reef, in Knoxville to stock up on new things. This is the best saltwater store in the area. Fins and Skins use to be my favorite but sadly they went under this year. There is another store called the Aquarium, but I am not a fan. I have been in there many times and have never been asked if I needed help and many times I did. Coral Reef, there are always there to help me and answer any questions I have plus they have a huge selection of fish and corals.

So, here are my new additions to the tanks.

2 Firefish

1 crab

2 snails

1 Green Goby

1 Algae Blenny

Candycone coral (the bright green one)

and some Zoanthus, green and pink corals

Ice Storm Khan January 27, 2013

If you live in East Tennessee then you already know what I am talking about. They named her Khan and she was cold as ice. She coated East Tennessee with a thin layer of freezing rain all day on Friday. Everything shut down, the town of Knoxville was hardly in operation. No mail, no newspaper, nothing was moving and that included us. We stayed home, didn’t have a choice really, and had a lazy day. I wrote a blog, cleaned house, cooked, baked, etc while he played Call of Duty for hours. I started getting a small case of cabin fever by dinner time and really wanted to leave but didn’t for fear the roads would refreeze once the sun was down. Our pups weren’t too happy about Khan and had trouble getting around outside to do their business. They were ice skating on the porch and in the yard. The Yorkie had to be rescued because after multiple attempts to climb the back steps he just couldn’t and I had to go get him. It was nice to stay home for a change but I am ready for warmer Spring time weather to come fast.

Sewing Project #1:Dog Coat January 26, 2013

I received a sewing machine as a Christmas gift and I finally found the time to get it out and learn how to use it. After figuring out how to thread the machine and what in the world a bobbin was, I started my first project. Project # 1: try to make a dog coat for my crazy husky. It has been over 10 years since I was in home economics so it took me some time to get everything in order. After making a mistake or two, I finally got it down and was sewing like a champ. I worked all night on the coat and I think it turned out pretty good for my first go around. The dog was not pleased about having to wear it but she wore until the next morning then I let her free. Next project is a 3 tier skirt, updates to come.

Rubbing Elbows with the Stars January 25, 2013

For my friend Maria’s Birthday we decided to hit the town starting in the mountains.  First stop was food. We needed fuel for the night and that fuel was seafood at Joe’s Crab Shack.

Next, we were off to the Hollywood Wax Museum in Pigeon Forge to rub elbows with the stars. For $18 ($15 if you purchase your tickets online and 24 hours prior to visiting) you get to tour the two-story museum and get close and personal with your favorite celebrities. I’ve never been to a wax museum before so I was not sure what to expect but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Now, if you are prude someone who does not like taking goofy pictures then you may not have as much fun as we did. The place is not crowded so you can go at your own pace and do not forget to bring your camera because there are numerous photo opportunities. I will say that some of the celebrities are hit or miss but for the most part I was able to identify 95% of the wax figures. I mean how often do you get to marry George Clooney, kick butt with Charlie’s Angels or chill with Hugh Heifers in his famous round red velvet bed?

This is an ideal place to go in the cold winter months or rainy. You can also tour their Maze of Mirrors and the 5D ride at the Castle of Chaos at a discounted price when you purchase your museum tickets. We added on the Castle of Chaos ride. This is combines a ride, video game, and a 3D film all-in- one. You buckle your seat belt and grab your gun to get ready to kill some zombies. You are playing against everyone in the room, close to 20 people. The ride spins you around the room while a 3D film is playing along the walls. There is air that puffs on you your feet and your gun will vibrate if you hit your target. I thought my gun was broken at first because I kept aiming at the zombies but they did not die. It turns out that my index figure was covering up the laser, duh. Of course, at the end of the game my husband had the highest score and Maria came in second. It was an entertaining ride but I wish it lasted longer.

Our third stop was to Barley’s Taproom to have some drinks and shoot some pool. I had an enjoyable time and hope Maria did as well. On the other hand I forget to bring her gift a long but that just means she gets to expand her birthday celebration a few more days.

Happy Birthday Maria!

Thunder Snow in the South January 24, 2013

It went from 70 degrees and sunny to low 30’s and snowing in the matter of a few days, really. I live in South Knoxville and I have renamed it the Bermuda Triangle because once bad weather hits East Tennessee it destroys South Knoxville. On 1/13/13 I got stuck 4 times on the way home from work. I am not one to drive in the snow but I can and I do well in it but I just DO NOT like it. When I left work, I called my husband, who works is West Knoxville, wondering why he hasn’t called to check my safety and he said it wasn’t even snowing there, crazy. By this time we already had 3 inches of snow and it was still coming down hard. I told him to head home ASAP but it was already too late. Traffic was starting to back up and the interstate was not moving. It took him 3 hours to drive home, should have been 30 minutes on a normal day.

There really wasn’t a hurry home because we had lost power at 5:00 pm and did not get in back on until late the next night. It was freezing in the house, well not technically it was 47 when we awoke the next morning. We passed the time by playing some board games and trying  to stay warm. We had to pull out the ski gear to stay warm. I slept in my long underwear and a coat, it was a long night. The worse part of the past few days was that the saltwater tank got too cold and the 2 clown fish and some corals did not make it. I thought our star fish was also a goner but he defrosted once the tanks was up and running again. He however did lose one leg but it will grow back in time. The dogs did enjoy playing the snow and it was nice to see everything covered in white but I only like it if the power stays on.

They are calling for more snow and ice tonight, joy.

Smooth New Ideas January 15, 2013

I am trying my hardest to start adding in more fruits and vegetables in my daily diet, but it is not easy thing to do. The best solution I have found is to start making smoothies from breakfast. That sounds easy, right? Well, once you wash, cut, blend, all the fruit it can eat up a lot of your morning. My smart idea, premake them, kind of.

wpid-IMAG0849.jpg

What I did was cut out all the time it takes to deal with all the fresh fruit. I know, you can use the frozen bag fruit and that works just as fast but I am all about fresh is always best. I blended about 3 servings sizes of smoothie, just the fruit, and stored them in mansion jars in the fridge. Now, when I wake up all I have to do is add a little bit of Greek yogurt along with a cup of ice = breakfast is served.
